Chapter 5: Monkey Temple and Other Sites - Nepali New Year
Since this was the Nepali New Year we experienced a magical afternoon sightseeing at the Monkey Temple - a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site located high atop a hill.
Our guide for today was Rohit, whom Dr. Del met in 2006 during the Annapurna Circuit trek when
he was a porter/guide and knew very little English. She saw him again in 2012. This year he speaks much better English.

At the Monkey Temple we saw monkeys but were instructed not to look them in the eye, as this is a sign of aggression. So is showing teeth. No smiling at the monkeys.
Steep steps and stones were missing in places making it necessary to keep one's eyes open and not trip or tumble all the way down. Good training for our days ahead.

This being the third day of the New Year explains the swarms of Nepalis and extra noise around the Boudha stupa earlier that morning. The sensory overload featured prayer wheels to spin, yak butter votives to burn and a selection from hundreds of Buddha images to choose from. There were marigold garlands, pinwheels, jewelry, masks, carvings and delicate hand-paintedthangkas to purchase.
